LIV WILSON (EMERGING)
THE UPRISING
As a photographer from Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, I use my camera to capture raw, often fragmented moments – sometimes driven by intentional storytelling, other times by spontaneous discovery. With a Bachelor of Creative Practice from EIT, I approach photography as a way of exploring these shifting states, allowing both the subject and the environment to guide the narrative.
The Uprising is deeply influenced by my experience with Bipolar 1, a condition that brings cycles of intense clarity and periods of deep obscurity. The image features my dear friend, with the majority of the subject and background blurred, symbolizing the uncertainty and shifting perceptions that often accompany mental health struggles. The deliberate blurring mirrors the experience of trying to remain visible in a world that sometimes feels out of focus—how the self can feel both lost and found within a moment.
Through this work, I explore the tension between being seen and remaining invisible, the internal battles that so often remain hidden. Photography allows me to illuminate the strength and resilience of women navigating mental health, reclaiming their space and visibility even in the blur.
