ICECREAM
"Aroha Mai, Aroha Atu" is a Maori proverb meaning "Love received, love returned". I wanted to create a series that reminds us to recognise everyday, simple pleasures. Doing this teaches our tamariki to cherish these moments, building resilience, body confidence and self-assurance to challenge negative messages we consume through the media and our communities.
EMMA BAKER
Based in Aotearoa, NZ, people and culture fascinate me. It’s pretty much the norm for me to come home with groceries in hand and random stories someone has told me about the skeletons in their closet. All while the kids scoot around my feet. Outside a cafe, in the school courtyard, and at work - people are always sharing about complex family dynamics, crazy antics, parenting palavers and taboo relationships. When I meet someone, it's the less obvious that intrigues me.
I seek to capture stories that gently challenge cliches, promote equity, inclusion and compassion but in a light-hearted, fun, and unobtrusive way. As a mother, wife, director, photographer and image-maker I feel pretty bloody lucky to have a tool for sharing these stories.
When I'm not working, you can usually find me with my favourite people, a coffee in hand, in my favourite spot at home among the trees, overlooking the city.
