KATE GREWAL
FISH INFLATION and TAKEAWAY JEWELS
According to Stats NZ, in November 2022 New Zealand experienced a 10.7 percent increase in the cost of food compared to the same month in 2021, the largest annual increase in over a decade. With grocery prices at record highs, families are struggling to put food on the table. Takeaways are a luxury only the rich can afford. The combined impact of climate change, global supply chain issues, and war will most certainly push costs even higher in the coming year. A cost that a growing number of households can no longer afford.
In this series, I wanted to emphasise how food has become a luxury item. From the price of eggs, veggies, meat and fish, to the odd Friday night takeaways, food across the spectrum has us checking our bank accounts before we head through check out. As a food photographer, I’m constantly purchasing ingredients for my images. The quality of the food has diminished, and the prices continue to rise. Here in Aotearoa, recent floods and unprecedented rain fall has destroyed crops, feed, and grazing land. The effects of this will be passed on to consumers with already stretched budgets.
